7 Free and Cheap Ideas for a No Spend Fall

It’s my favorite time of year! Fall! I freaking love fall. Leggings and boots and pumpkin spice! I’m the most basic bitch you’ll ever meet, this time of year! Here are a few of my favorite (cheap or free!) things to do in order to enjoy fall!

1. Go For a Hike

I mean, I’m not saying you need to put on like, shoes with cleats or anything. But I guarantee there is a forest preserve not too far from you that you haven’t explored yet. Take the dogs (make sure they’re up to date on tick preventative!) or a friend you haven’t seen for a while and just go explore for a bit. Or, bring a good audiobook with you and get lost.

2. Play a Board Game

One of the most fun, and inexpensive things we do with our friends is plan a game night! Ask everyone to bring a small snack (think chips and dips and cookies) and a game. We bust out a couple folding tables and let folks choose what they want to play. If you don’t have a great selection of board games around, I bet you someone you know does! Or, check your local library! Lots of times you can rent them for free.

3. Bake Something (with apples or pumpkin!)

Pumpkin bread! Apple Pie! Do it! If you’ve got a well-stocked pantry you probably have most of the ingredients you need already. Plus, apples are dirt cheap this time of year! Do it!

4. Get cozy with your favorite comfort book, a fuzzy blanket, and a great cup of cider!

I mean, I do this a lot already. Even when it’s not fall. Take a look at your bookshelf overflowing with your “to read” pile and pick one! Or find an old friend that you love to read. Get comfy and get reading. I like to light candles and make a cup of tea or cider. Sometimes even a hot toddy if I’m feeling fancy.

5. Binge a great show!

Stranger Things season 2 is just around the corner and I’m not planning on doing anything that night! A couple other shows I’ve recently fallen for are Crazy Ex Girlfriend (don’t let the name fool you! This is the smartest show on TV!) and Riverdale. Oh man, I’m so fucking basic, but I LOVE Riverdale. Love.

6. Volunteer

Is there anyone in your neighborhood that needs help with fall clean up? Leaves get heavy after a time and I bet they’d be grateful if you offered to help. Otherwise, consider finally visiting the animal shelter you’ve always said you want to volunteer for. Or bring one of those board games to a nursing home or assisted living facility. There are lots of people there who’d just love for someone to visit with them.

7. Pack a Picnic

This one is fun! Pasta salads and fruit salads. Old fashioned PB&Js. Pack a picnic and visit your favorite park or lake or pretty spot. Bring a football to toss or a soccer ball to kick. Just have fun outdoors.
